Jayda Calon
Growing up in rural Alberta, Jayda’s work is heavily influenced by her time spent living a quiet, isolated, country life. Currently residing in the city of Edmonton has been a challenge and has created an internal divide that drives Jayda’s creative output. Throughout her university degree, she has broadly taken interest in issues of abstraction, materiality, and the natural world. Her preferred mediums of painting and sculpture aid in creating pieces that play with aesthetic functionality which inform conceptual features in her work. Jayda’s latest works deal with her struggle to let go of the past and grappling with urbanization. Jayda preserves memories through precious items in still life painting and in sculpture which blend her relationship with nature. This stems from her rural roots, and city life which attempts to address the tension of elements of these two worlds.
